They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. I say a quote is worth 1,000 pictures. They are a great tool for the classroom. An appropriate quote can reflect an event on famous person’s character better than a wall of text.

Example: “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” J. Robert Oppenheimer

What a great quote to debate. Here is one of the world’s most brilliant scientific minds denigrating himself as an evil doer. But was he? Or did he save hundreds of thousands of lives?

I’ve compiled a list of quotes for American history. It is laid out in chronological order by topic. I wrote a separate article covering quotes for World History units here.
