Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise yet meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary can provide more detailed information about the person's life, while a shorter one might focus on the essential facts.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may require specific formatting, word count, or deadlines for publication.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can be a therapeutic exercise and provide comfort to loved ones after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge per word or line. Online obituary platforms often provide affordable pricing plans or even free services.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to avoid errors.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary. This allows you to control who can view the tribute while still sharing it with close family and friends.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to the obituary and reflect the personality or interests of the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain historical records. Many online obituary platforms also offer search functions for archived tributes.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before sharing.

What if I want to write multiple obituaries for different audiences?

This is a common practice when there are different groups of friends, family members, or colleagues who would like to remember the deceased in distinct ways. You can tailor each obituary to suit the audience and publication.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's life and personality. Just be sure to consider the tone and audience when adding humorous elements.

How do I handle mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you notice errors in the published obituary. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as soon as possible.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

This is completely normal. Consider seeking support from a friend, family member, or professional writer who can help you craft a meaningful tribute during this difficult time.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to charities or organizations that were important to their loved one rather than receiving flowers. This information can be included in the obituary.

Most online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link into emails or messaging apps.

What if I want to create a permanent online memorial for my loved one?

You can create a permanent online memorial through various websites that offer this service. These memorials often allow visitors to leave condolences, share memories, and upload photos.

Can I include videos or audio clips in an online obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to upload multimedia content like videos or audio clips that celebrate your loved one's life and personality.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This depends on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some may keep it available indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period. Be sure to check their policies before publishing.
