Packers' full 70-player roster entering Week 1, featuring 53-man roster and practice squad (2024)

The Green Bay Packers’ full 70-player team entering Week 1 of the 2023 season features the 53-man roster and 17 players on the practice squad. (Note: Matt LaFleur’s team gets an extra practice squad spot due to an international exemption for outside linebacker Kenneth Odumegwu.) The Packers are prepping all 70 players for a trip to Chicago for the season-opening showdown against the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.

Here’s a breakdown of the 70-player roster, position-by-position, entering the first week of the 2023 season (this will be updated if Packers make any roster changes before Sunday):

Quarterbacks (3)

On 53-man roster (2): Jordan Love, Sean Clifford
On practice squad (1): Alex McGough

All eyes will be on Love, who is entering his first year as the starter after sitting behind Aaron Rodgers for three seasons. His backup will be Clifford, a fifth-round pick out of Penn State who was impressive during the preseason. McGough, the USFL MVP in 2023, is the No. 3 option on the practice squad.

Running backs (4)

On 53-man roster (3): Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Emanuel Wilson
On practice squad (1): Patrick Taylor

Jones and Dillon have produced over 2,000 total yards during each of the last two seasons and should be the engine of the offense in 2023. Wilson, an undrafted rookie, won a roster spot after leading the NFL in rushing yards during the preseason. Taylor’s versatility landed him back on the practice squad. Expect the Packers to elevate him on gamedays several times (up to 3) early in the season for special teams.

Wide receivers (8)

On the roster (6): Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure, Dontayvion Wicks, Malik Heath
On practice squad (2): Grant DuBose, Bo Melton

Seven of the eight receivers were selected in the 2022 or 2023 drafts, and the lone exception is undrafted rookie Malik Heath. This position group is defined by inexperience but also potential. The Packers need Watson and Doubs to take big steps as second-year players and Reed to contribute right away as a rookie.

Tight ends/fullbacks (6)

On 53-man roster (4): Josiah Deguara, Luke Musgrave, Tucker Kraft, Ben Sims
On practice squad (2): Austin Allen, Henry Pearson

The tight end depth chart features three rookies and a player the Packers are now labeling as a fullback. The practice squad offers no help in the experience department. The Packers added Sims, an undrafted free agent, off waivers from the Vikings after setting the initial roster, while Allen and Pearson could both be practice squad elevations at some point this season. Expect growing pains as a bunch of young players learn how to play a difficult position on the fly.

Offensive linemen (11)

On 53-man roster (10): David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan Jr., Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, Royce Newman, Yosh Nijman, Sean Rhyan, Caleb Jones
On practice squad (1): Kadeem Telfort
On injured reserve (1): Luke Tenuta

The starting five come Sunday should be (from left to right) Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Myers, Runyan and Tom, but the Packers think Walker and Nijman are capable starters at tackle. Newman started 20 games the last two seasons. Rhyan improved greatly to start Year 2, while Jones, Telfort and Tenuta are all players the Packers are developing long-term at tackle. By making the initial 53-man roster and then going on injured reserve, Tenuta (ankle) can return and play this season.

Defensive linemen (7)

On the 53-man roster (5): Kenny Clark, TJ Slaton, Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, Karl Brooks
On the practice squad (2): Chris Slayton, Jonathan Ford

If the two young starters take a leap and the rookies are ready to play immediately, the Packers will be set up front on defense. Slaton, Wyatt, Wooden and Brooks are inheriting a bunch of snaps from Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed, who left in free agency. Ford, who flashed disruptive ability this summer and made the initial 53-man roster, is a nice backup option to have developing on the practice squad.

Outside linebackers/edge rushers (9)

On 53-man roster (6): Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Kingsley Enagbare, Justin Hollins, Lukas Van Ness, Brenton Cox Jr.
On practice squad (3): Keshawn Banks, Arron Mosby, Kenneth Odumegwu (IPP)

Arguably the deepest position on the roster. The Packers have two established starters, including Gary, a Pro Bowl-caliber player. Enagbare was a standout during the preseason, Hollins can play a variety of roles in Joe Barry’s defense, and Van Ness and Cox provide a major influx of rookie talent to develop. The Packers got a strong preseason from Banks, and Mosby, if elevated. can play special teams in a pinch.

Inside linebackers (5)

On the 53-man roster (4): De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie, Eric Wilson
On practice squad (1): Kristian Welch

Campbell, an All-Pro in 2021, is dealing with an ankle injury but should be ready for Week 1. The Packers are banking on Walker improving significantly in Year 2, while McDuffie and Wilson are both back to provide depth and core players on special teams. Welch, a former Raven and Wisconsin native, played over 900 snaps on special teams over the last three seasons.

Cornerbacks (7)

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (23) and cornerback Rasul Douglas (29) during the Packers’ 2023 training camp on Monday, July 31, 2023 at Ray Nitschke Field in Green Bay, Wis.

On 53-man roster (4): Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine
On practice squad (3): Corey Ballentine, Kiondre Thomas, Innis Gaines
PUP (1): Eric Stokes

The Packers will roll with only four cornerbacks until Stokes, who must miss at least the first four games, recovers from last season’s foot injury. Keeping three on the practice squad, including Gaines, who can play in the slot, provides early season depth/insurance. While Nixon is unproven in the slot, Alexander and Douglas could be one of the NFL’s best cornerback tandems.

Safeties (7)

On 53-man roster (6): Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Jonathan Ford, Zayne Anderson, Dallin Leavitt, Anthony Johnson Jr.
On practice squad (1): Benny Sapp

The Packers technically list Innis Gaines (practice squad) as a safety, so the roster has eight safeties total. Claiming Anderson off waivers added another special teamer. Johnson must develop behind three questionable vets who will play the most snaps. This is the position with the most question marks entering Week 1.

Specialists (3)

On 53-man roster (3): Anders Carlson, Daniel Whelan, Matt Orzech
On practice squad (0)

The Packers went young on special teams with Carlson, a rookie draft pick, and Whelan, a first-year punter. Orzech has 50 games of experience as an NFL long snapper. There are no developmental players on the practice squad at any of the three specialist positions.
