Biden administration canceling student loans for another 160,000 borrowers

  • By COLLIN BINKLEY - AP Education Writer

The Biden administration is canceling student loans for another 160,000 borrowers through a combination of existing programs. The Education Department announced the latest round of cancellation on Wednesday, saying it will erase $7.7 billion in federal student loans. With the latest action, the administration said it has canceled $167 billion for nearly 5 million Americans through several forgiveness programs. The latest relief will go to borrowers in three categories who hit certain milestones that make them eligible for cancellation. The cancellation is moving forward even as President Joe Biden’s SAVE Plan faces legal challenges from Republican-led states.

Leverkusen's unbeaten season puts the spotlight on an often-overlooked German city

  • By JAMES ELLINGWORTH - AP Sports Writer

An otherwise-overlooked small German city dominated by a pharmaceuticals plant is making its case to be considered one of Europe’s soccer capitals as Bayer Leverkusen plays a historic unbeaten season. A low-rise city of 167,000 that grew up around the factories of the pharmaceuticals giant Bayer, Leverkusen has little to draw tourists besides its internationally famed soccer club. The team finished an entire German Bundesliga season unbeaten Saturday and is now targeting trophies in the Europa League and German Cup.

Spain, Ireland and Norway will recognize a Palestinian state on May 28. Why does that matter?

  • The Associated Press

Spain, Ireland and Norway have said that they will recognize a Palestinian state on May 28, a step toward a long-held Palestinian aspiration that came amid international outrage over the civilian death toll and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip following Israel’s offensive. The triple and almost simultaneous decisions Wednesday may generate momentum for the recognition of a Palestinian state by other EU countries and could spur further steps at the United Nations, deepening Israel’s isolation. Malta and Slovenia, which also belong to the 27-nation European Union, may follow suit. Some 140 of 190 represented in the U.N. countries have already recognized Palestine.

Danish police temporarily ban the Bandidos motorcycle club, citing violence

  • AP

Danish police have issued a temporary ban on the Danish arm of the Bandidos motorcycle club, citing the group’s violent behavior. The head of Denmark’s National Special Crime Unit said Wednesday that the group’s activities and the behavior of its members pose a serious threat to citizens’ lives and safety. It means that group members cannot use their clubhouses, hold meetings or wear their insignias. Last month, Denmark’s government said it wants a court to formally dissolve the motorcycle club. Under the Danish Constitution, an organization that promotes or incites violence can be dissolved by court.

Cameron said small boat arrivals from Albania to the U.K. fell by over 90% in 2023 as the two countries fought people smuggling gangs, and Britain has removed almost 6,000 Albanians. While in Albania, Cameron will discuss the need for greater collaboration across Europe on the challenge of migration, including organized crime, Western Balkan security, and both countries’ support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, according to a statement issued Wednesday.
