I am so excited to share this fun Valentine's Day idea with you.

Last Valentine's Day, I was seeing breakable chocolate hearts everywhere. I knew I wanted to come up with a unique twist on the viral concept and am excited to share these colorful breakable chocolate conversation hearts with you.

Back in 2012, I shared a tutorial to make heart-shaped chocolate boxes. I made them by pouring chocolate into heart-shaped cookie cutters and forming a box by attaching modeling chocolate strips in between two of the chocolate hearts. They made wonderful Valentine's Day gifts.

I wanted these breakable chocolate heart boxes to be completely made out of chocolate (in this case colored candy melts), so I needed to use a mold instead.

Silicone heart molds are easy to find online. I used an 8-inch silicone heart mold to make a giant Reese's Cup Heart earlier this year. I knew that mold would work but it was larger than I wanted so I purchased some 6-inch silicone heart molds and they worked perfectly!

They make really nice size heart boxes. Each heart is about six inches in diameter and when two hearts are put together they are about 2 inches thick. There's just enough room inside the hollow chocolate heart to put a nice amount of Valentine's Day candy.

Plus, making chocolate heart-shaped shells is so easy using silicone molds.

Let's make some breakable chocolate conversation hearts!

step 1 - create two halves of a breakable chocolate heart

  1. Pour about 3 ½ ounces of melted candy melts into a 6-inch silicone heart mold.
  2. Brush the candy melts over the bottom and up the sides of the mold.
  3. Make sure the sides or completely covered. The chocolate will probably be really thin around the edges and that's alright.
  4. Wipe any excess chocolate off the top edge of the mold.
  5. Freeze for 5-10 minutes just until the candy melts harden.
  6. Remove from the freezer and let it rest at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
  7. Then brush another layer of candy melts around the edge of the mold.
  8. Use a sharp knife to scrape any excess chocolate off the top edge of the mold.
  9. Freeze for a minute or two until the second layer of chocolate hardens.
  10. Then, un-mold. Peel the silicone mold away from the chocolate.

step 2- fill the chocolate heart with candy, then seal the two halves

  1. Fill one chocolate heart with your favorite Valentine's Day candy.
    • You can use conversation hearts, M&M's, jelly hearts, Sweet Tart Hearts, and more.
    • Or you can get fancy and fill your boxes with homemade chocolate truffles.
    • If you want to go all out, make homemade Conversation Heart Truffles to put inside your breakable conversation heart boxes.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat for 10-20 seconds.
  3. Place the empty heart into the skillet allowing the top edge of the heart to melt.
  4. Set that heart on top of the candy-filled heart and press gently to seal the two edges together.

notes about sealing the two chocolate hearts together

Once sealed together, you may want to go around the seam and add a bit more melted chocolate (get it from the skillet) to fill in any gaps. These boxes will be rather heavy once filled with Valentine's Day candy so you want to make sure the two hearts are sealed together well.

If you feel more comfortable, you could pipe candy melts around the top edge of the candy-filled box, then press the other heart over top. The candy melts will ooze and may look rather messy but the two halves will be sealed well.

step 3 - pipe on conversation heart phrases

  1. Fill a squeeze bottle or a pastry bag fitted with a #3 or #4 round tip (plastic is best) with melted red candy melts
  2. Pipe conversation heart phrases like "be mine," "love you", and "hug me" onto the top of each colorful chocolate heart.
  3. Pop the heart into the freezer for a minute or two just until the red candy melts harden.

tips for decorating your conversation heart chocolates

I find using a squeeze bottle is easiest for me. Just be sure to have all of your hearts ready to be decorated so you can pipe the phrases onto the hearts all at one time. The red candy melts will harden in the squeeze bottle and in the pastry tip rather quickly.

You don't want to stop and start a lot. If you do, you may need to clean the candy melts out of the pastry tip and reheat the candy melts in the bottle.

You could also paint on the words if you prefer.Breakable Chocolate Conversation Hearts | Hungry Happenings (6)

Make hearts in any or all of the conversation heart colors.

Candy melts come in every color you need including pink, blue, yellow, orange, green, purple, and white.

To give these chocolate heart boxes as gifts, wrap them in clear cellophane and tie them with a bow.

You can even tie on a wooden mallet.
